What are the Recommended Protocols for Microneedling?

As with all medical procedures, it is important to follow recommended protocols for microneedling. Bellus Medical provides detailed instructions for clinicians using the SkinPen® device. Below are some key protocols that should be observed.

When To Use SkinPen®

Microneedling can help improve the appearance of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles on any part of the body. However, for the face, the procedure should not be used within the orbital rim (eyelids). Microneedling is also not recommended for patients who have an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, or active skin cancer in the procedure area.

Pre-Procedure Protocols

Use the SkinPen® Procedure Log to plan and track each patient’s care. This handy one-sheet allows you to note areas to be addressed, procedure depth by area, and each pass completed.

It is important that patients understand how the microneedling procedure will unfold and what they need to do before and after the session. An easy way to discuss this with patients is to share with them the Bellus Medical SkinPen® Procedure Considerations sheet. This explains in detail what the patient needs to know, but it can also help trigger additional questions they may have. Give them the sheet to use as an at-home reminder.

Performing The Procedure

Double-check that your patient has signed their consent form. Be sure the battery for the microneedling device is fully charged. Wear single-use, non-latex gloves.

Cleanse the patient’s face using Skinfuse® PURIFY Cleansing Complex, then take “before” photos of the procedure area(s).

Apply a topical anesthetic according to directions, or use Skinfuse® NUMB that is provided in the SkinPen®  Treatment kit. All topicals must be removed prior to the microneedling procedure, it is recommended to use an antiseptic solution to remove all residue on the skin. Skinfuse® LIFT HG may then be applied to the skin to protect it from abrasion or friction during the procedure.

Needle depth is determined on a patient-by-patient basis dependent on individual needs.

Post-Procedure Protocols

Pat down the procedure area with sterile gauze, then generously apply Skinfuse® LIFT HG. This will help keep skin hydrated. Patients may repeat as necessary at home.

Review the SkinPen® Procedure Considerations sheet with your patient again, focusing on the post-procedure details.

Care And Storage

After every procedure, remove the cartridge from the microneedling device, then remove the Bio-Sheath and wipe down the device with a Sani-Cloth® germicidal cloth. The sterile microneedle cartridge and Bio-Sheath are designed for single use only. Use a sharps container for needle disposal.
