Scheduling convenience is one of the many things patients like about SkinPen® microneedling. But that doesn’t mean every patient has the same treatment protocol. Everyone’s skin is different. Microneedling is a highly-tailored skin rejuvenation procedure. Microneedling with the SkinPen® is used to soften facial fine lines and wrinkles, but it is also widely popular for reducing the appearance of stretch marks and acne scars.
Recommendations for one person may be quite different from the protocol used for other patients since skin needs vary from one individual to another. Nonetheless, the basic sequence of events for microneedling patients remains the same for everyone.
The First Step Is A Personal Consultation
Each patient schedules a one-on-one meeting with their provider. Together, they discuss the patient’s skin and desired aesthetic goals. This meeting helps both the clinician and patient confirm that microneedling is the best procedural choice.
Providers like microneedling because it’s safe and effective for all skin types, and the SkinPen® device is easy and efficient to use. Patients typically prefer microneedling because of these features:
- Uses no harsh chemicals
- Cost-effective alternative
- Short treatment sessions – usually just 30 to 60 minutes
- Minimal downtime compared to laser or other treatments
- Safe, sterile, single-use microneedling cartridge
The provider can then establish a plan of care for the patient and start a Procedure Log. The log sheet allows the clinician to identify all planned procedure areas on the body, and record notes after each session.
At this meeting, the provider also reviews the Bellus Medical SkinPen® Procedure Considerations sheet with the patient, emphasizing pre-procedure instructions, warnings, and precautions. The patient can take the sheet home as a reminder. Among other things, they should avoid tanning prior to their first appointment. This includes natural sun exposure and also artificial tanning products or methods. They should also avoid skin products that contain vitamin A or retinol.
Recommended Procedure Sessions
Prior to the first procedure, the clinician will take “before” photos of the patient’s skin. More photos will be taken at the beginning of each subsequent procedure, to create a visual chronology of microneedling results.
Following this procedure, the clinician will record microneedling details on the Procedure Log, and then schedule the patient’s next session, about 4 weeks later. Microneedling is a gradual process, therefore it may take several procedures to achieve the specific results desired.
Before the patient leaves, the clinician will go over the post-procedure instructions on the SkinPen® Procedure Considerations sheet. The emphasis here is on the use of the Skinfuse® skin care regimen. These products are specially formulated to support the SkinPen® microneedling procedure. It’s important that the patient understands how and when to use additional products – and equally important to know when not to use any other products that could impede or reverse the skin’s healing process.
That’s about it. SkinPen® microneedling is a choice for patients looking to soften fine lines and wrinkles, and for providers to provide patients with a method to achieve those results. Better yet, the recommended protocol fits even the busiest patient’s lifestyle.
